Lacity and Hirschheim are the leading lights in looking at the outsourcing phenomenom. Unlike many who blindly push a point of view, they balance their advice through rigorous research and real case studies. This book demonstrates their immense understanding of the issues involved with the insourcing / outsourcing decision and gives page after page of practical advice on how to approach such a decision. The advice is easy to apply and works. I recommend this to information system managers and researchers who wish to review an exemplary approach to honest case studies.

The book has some interesting insights, for example it says that in many cases insourcing can be just as efficient as outsourcing, but overall however the book is very out of date. Almost all the case studies involve possible outsourcing of datacenters running main frames. It discusses cost cutting measures involving automating tape loading and batch printing of reports! It only once mentions in passing today's style of outsourcing which is to countries like India and China. I also found very annoying the constant repetitions of the same arguments and quotes from people the authors had interviewed.

The book provides both a framework and a set of the case studies of IT Outsourcing: subcontracting to a third party the implementation and maintenance of networks, software, support, backup etc.

According to the framework presented in this book, IT Outsourcing allows a company to get rid of its non-key activities and allocate the resources to its main business. This allows the company to cut costs and be at the top of progress in the IT.

The book covers the basic aspects of planning, negotiating, implementation, cooperation and termination of IT outsourcing. It covers all the issues: technical, economical, legal and so on.

I recommend this book as a starting point to any manager who deals with IT, to broaden the views.

Although the framework is good from the academic point of view, the examples are laid out in a manner that lacks variety, liveliness and brightness.

Do you work for an outsourcing provider? J Brian Heywood's book about outsourcing is a comprehensive look at the topic from the perspective of both the client considering outsourcing as a way to improve their competitiveness and the outsourcing service provider. Both types of organisations will gain an invaluable insight into the outsourcing world. The book gives sound advice and backs up the advice with loads of actual examples. The author explains how outsourcing, if handled correctly, has the potential to produce real tangible saving for all types of organisations, not just large ones. He also explains how outsourcing arrangements can fail and what clients and service providers should do to limit their risks of failure. The book answers the questions:·	Why outsource?·	What are the benefits of outsourcing?·	Which functions should an organisation should consider outsourcing?·	What are the alternatives to full outsourcing?·	How does an organisation choose an outsourcing service provider? The author argues the case for a `Business Satellite' approach to outsourcing where the client and the service provider establish a separate organisation that is jointly owned so both can share in the future benefits generated from the outsourcing agreement. I would say that this book is a must read for any organisation looking for ways to improve their competitiveness in today's market.

If you think about it, $ 375 for each side is not so bad. Especially when it covers the utility billing outsourcing through to 2008! Seriously, how can you make a mistake?Rating: 5 / 5
